Understanding Diamonds
The diamond 4Cs
Cut: how a diamond's proportions, symmetry, and finish influence light performance. Color: a grading system for the degree of body color, often used for colorless-to-lightly tinted diamonds. Clarity: the characteristics inside and on the surface of a stone. Carat: weight, not a direct measurement of visible size.
Choosing a shape
Round, oval, emerald, cushion, radiant, pear, marquise, princess, heart, and Asscher cuts offer different outlines and visual character. Dimensions and cutting proportions can make stones of equal carat weight appear different in size.
Natural and laboratory-grown diamonds
Natural diamonds form in the Earth; laboratory-grown diamonds are produced through industrial processes. Both can be diamonds, but origin, market pricing, and grading details differ. Ask which type is being offered for a specific product.
Reports and certification
When a grading report is provided, verify its issuing laboratory and report number. Do not assume every stone is certified. Ask MARTIOR for the report information, if applicable, before purchasing.
